Star Trek for a Solar Age
Gene Roddenberry who lived between 1921 and 1991 is best known for his creation of Star Trek… “where no MAN has gone before.” William Shatner had some fun with it for awhile until Womens Libbers grabbed Bill by the nape of the neck and made him promise never to exclude women from space exploration again. By the time Patrick Stewart took the helm Jon-Luc Picard was saying “Where no ONE has has gone before” and “Star Trek “which became “Star Trek The Next Generation” has never been the same since. Is Jon Luc Picard afraid of women? ……. I don’t think so. Should women have the right to vote? …….Of course they should Should a women take the helm and become president? … Anything is possible in a “Solar Age” and who knows a African American man might become our next leader. Anyhow “Star Trek for a Solar Age” is about more than gender or racial or religious differences. The Prime Directive was a concept developed by Gene Roddenberry to guide and encourage natural social evolution. More damage has been done to mankind and womankind in the name of social and religious “progress” than the Bubonic Plague in Europe, the Pototo Famine in Ireland and the Civil War in the U.S. A long, long time ago…Pharohs enslaved thousands to pile up stones in the hope that a diety would find them and breathe life into their decayed remains. We’re all going to die someday. Do you believe in Santa Claus or television evangelists or the George W dynasty corporation. Who do you believe in? How about believing in yourself? The Greeks believed in themselves. Free thought and logic were encouraged in the Greek culture. Plato and Socrates and Pythagoras flourshed in a democratic environment but a few power hungry dictators soon put an end to the “Greek Age of Enligntenment”. The Roman Empire was built on the ashes of the Greek democratic social order. Julius Ceasar addressed the Roman Senate in 47 BC with these famous words ”Veni, vidi, vici” ‘I came, I saw, I conquered.” These words set the tone for the tumultuous times to follow. A hundred years passed as Ceasar’s dream of world domination gained plausibility but a string of decadent rulers began to reverse this trend. “Nero fiddled as Rome burned” in 50 BC, and for the next 700 years the Roman Empire went into decline. In 800 AD the Holy Roman Empire was born and "By the sword and the cross”, Charlemagne became master of Western Europe. He continued the work begun by Julius Caesar. A NEW reign of terror began. Non- believers were burned at the stake. Free thinking pagans were eliminated before they became a threat. “Believe or Die” was a motto that echoed throughout the dark ages. We are the survivors of those dark times. Our ancestors were forced into submission through fear and we are still controlled by that fear today. Be good, pay taxes, burn oil, support the war or we might be burned at the stake or perhaps we’ll just have a wet burlap bag tied around our head. So you’re suffering. That’s OK as long as you die as a God-fearing man / women. Your next life will be better. Right? Don’t count on it. Without the freedom to think and act in a rational manner life is just another four letter word. “Give me liberty or give me death” are words our nation was built on. History does not have to repeat itself. We have time to wake up. Buckminster Fuller was right when the said: “We have wandered too far from the roots.” Look to the stars for guidance. We are all children under the same sky. A “Solar Age” is on our doorstep. Are we ready to let it in or do we return to the dark ages for a refresher course in history?
